Running for Office WorkshopOn January 18, 2006 LBC sponsored an Informational Briefing about Running for Office which was a successful event. There were 30 community members in attendance
The panel members were well receivied. Norma Trimpe covered the forms that needed to be filed by a candidate, the filing deadlines and a new ruling that everyone must now have a State or Federal ID when they go to the polls in order to vote. This prompted a lot of questions around what that meant for seniors, absentee ballots, etc. Ted Ogle, Republican Pary Chair and Scott Andrews, Democratic Party Chair, spoke about all the different offices that were up for election. They talked about the requirements for a Judge and Prosecutor (being an attorney) and what constitutional offices were (those with term limits). Pia O'Connor was a delight with her humor and addressed what running for School Board entailed and what it meant to be a School Board Member. She addressed how much time she spent going to different meetings, what kinds of issues the school board was responsible for, how large of a budget they oversaw etc. Rick Scalf who runs Groundwell Communications Strategies, spoke on how a candidate needs to look at the number of votes needed to win an election, how to put together a plan for running for office, developing a theme for your campaign and using that theme in everything you do.
There were several candidates in attendance and many questions asked from the audience. I received a lot of positive feed back following the event. Everyone I spoke to felt it was informative and helpful.

Our class leader, Fredricka Joyner, discussed community based work and then introduced Bob Wilson who led the discussion on the results of everyone's Predictive Index (which was very informative). The class had many opportunities to break into groups and have begun getting to know one another.
